When I sat down to write today, I wasn’t sure where to start or what topic to choose. Then I figured why choose. Also I don’t want to write a newsletter, so this is what you get instead.

Creative Writing and Autism

I recently saw a post on Instagram from @autistic_callum where he spoke about autistic people “struggling with initiating creative thought in an abstract setting.” Meaning, we usually do better when we have some direction or specific topic in mind. I can’t work under free rein, but with a little direction my creativity can flourish.

I resonated with this post immediately. It’s as if a piece clicked into place in my brain.

This has been happening to me a lot lately, especially when it comes to my creative writing.

I’ve always struggled with plotting my novels, never wanting to go overboard with details and overthink it, but also never having enough in place to actually be happy with the end result. Unless I happen to have the scene plotted, even in my head, the words flow much more easily.

Additionally, one of V.E.Schwab’s more recent newsletters mentions she takes 4 months to outline, 4 months to draft, and 4 months to edit. It’s the longest I’ve ever heard anyone take to plot and outline.
